A classic saga reimagined

A Boy and His Blob: Retro Collection is a premium adventure game repackaged by Limited Run Games. This is a re-release of the classic games A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia and The Rescue of Princess Blobette. These are 2D platforming games with puzzle elements thrown in, putting you in control of a young human male and his blob partner as they save the world and, later, the princess.

By retaining the original content of the two games, A Boy and His Blob: Retro Collection is a great nostalgic entry, slightly similar to Super Meat Boy.

Relive the classic blob adventure

A Boy and His Blob: Retro Collection contains the NES classic Trouble on Blobolonia and its sequel, The Rescue of Princess Blobette, which was originally on Game Boy. In both games, you control the human kid as his partner, Blobert, follows him around. The blob can transform into a variety of objects that can be used to obtain items or cross obstacles.

Although it contains the original games, not the high-definition port in 2016, there are a couple of quality-of-life (QoL) improvements. In the classic games, losing all your lives means starting all the way from the top. Here, however, there are save states that allow you to save and load exact moments from the game without the need to find save spots or start again.

Since the game is faithful to a fault, expect the second game to appear poorly. It is an 8-bit game without any color, which seems like a downgrade compared to the first one. Also, unlike dated games that become increasingly difficult, this one is on the gentler end of the spectrum. The puzzles are mostly straightforward and enemies are pretty easy to deal with.

A collectible for retro gamers

As far as retro games go, A Boy and His Blob: Retro Collection doesn’t exactly bring classic games to life. The premise and story are unique, sure, but it’s one of the simpler games for their respective platforms. Also, it repackages all the content of the original games, while adding a few features that make it more enjoyable. Overall, this is a must-have for fans of retro titles.

PROS

  • Faithfully translates the original games
  • Adds a couple of QoL features

CONS

  • Doesn’t include the 2016 remaster
  • Games are too easy
